Projects not using RWSL-like Model

The records in this list were looked at as potential RWSL-like projects, but for one reason or another it was decided that these did not fit the criteria of an RWSL-like lab exercise delivery system.  The NANSLO project is dedicated to an open model, so there are a few records here that while they appear to be RWSL-like they are dedicated to the students of a specific institution.

Participating institutions: Penn State University

Funding Source(s): NSF

Purpose:

The Penn State Center for Nanotechnology Education and Utilization (CNEU) is the home of the Pennsylvania Nanofabrication Manufacturing Technology (NMT) Partnership and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Regional Center for Nanofabrication Manufacturing Education, an NSF-sponsored regional Advanced Technology Education (ATE) Center . The Center for Nanotechnology Education and Utilization (CNEU) is dedicated to research, development, and education across all aspects of micro- and nanotechnology. The resources of the Center for Nanotechnology Education and Utilization (CNEU) are focused on the incorporation of nanotechnology into secondary education, post-secondary education, and industry applications.

The Center Builds Programs and Provided Resources by Offering

  •       Hands-on laboratory experiences for students:The 18-credit capstone semester in nanofabrication is taught at the Penn State Nanofabrication

               Facility

  •       Nanotechnology course and program development: Every community college in Pennsylvania now offers an associate degree in

               nanofabrication.

  •       Student recruitment materials: Videos, displays, and brochures complement three-day summer "Nanotech Camps" for secondary students at

               Penn State.

  •       Articulated 2+2+2 educational pathways: Pathways from secondary schools throug associate degrees to baccalaureate degrees and beyond are

               in place.

  •       Job placement services for students: Nanofabrication job fairs are held every semester at Penn State for community college students.
  •       Professional development workshops for educators: Educators learn about nanotechnology and help develop learning tools for use in their

               classrooms.

  •       Nanotechnology instructional materials: Efforts focus on developing hands-on nanotechnology laboratory experiences for use by community

               colleges.

Related:

The goal of the NACK Center is to provide national coordination of micro- and nanofabrication workforce development programs and activities on behalf of NSF. The center will assist educational institutions and industry across the nation to work together to exploit nanotechnology and to develop and deliver micro- and nanotechnology education programs, including incumbent worker training programs. The center will also help to develop national education program accreditation and worker skill standards in micro-and nanotechnology. (NACK = Nanotechnology Applications and Career Knowledge)

2011: Cannot tell if this offers any online lab capability.

2011: I looked and this appears to have only face-to-face workshops - RKE

2012/01/04: While this is a Pennsylvania wide initiative, other than some web-based training material, CNEU does not appear to serve lab exercises on-line, but instead focuses on bringing researchers to various nanottech centres. - RKE

It is difficult to tell from this website, but the remote labs in this system are for University of Wyoming students only.  This is not the open architecture we hope to achieve in NANSLO.
