Tech Staff/Support

The "FTE Salary Cost" given here are rough estimates of what it costs an employer for an FTE employee including all benefits etc.  It is not what is paid to the employee.  These estimates are only 'ball park' estimates.  For a given institution to determine the actual cost, its collective agreement (or other internal ways of calculating employee salaries) must be consulted.

Further, full time employees may not always be required.  (Obviously a half time employee costs approximately half of what an FTE employee costs.)  The number and type of RWSL Units an institution intends to deploy will dictate the number of technical people at each level that will be required.  There will also be economies of scale where multiple RWSL Units are deployed at a particular node.  These are difficult to predict until we have more experience with operating various RWSL Units.

RDN Level:
RWSL Experiment Designer/Architect Supervisor (FTE Salary Cost ~ $90,000/yr?)
This is someone who can conceptualize how to design and architect an actual RWSL experiment based on a faculty members request (re: an 'Albert'). This person must be able to do software programming and understand how it will manipulate/operate the hardware. Role includes identifying suitable hardware, designing software program for implementation.

(Albert and Dan: Please list the skills required for this person)

RWSL Experiment Designer/Architect (FTE Salary Cost ~ $80,000/yr?)

This is someone who has the same skills as the RWSL Experiment Designer/Architect Supervisor, but less experience.  This person will work with the Supervisor to design and implement new RWSL mediated Labs.  This person will be a member of the RWSL Tech Network.  Initially there will be only one person in this position, but as development activity builds, more will be required.

(Albert and Dan: Please list the skills required for this person)

Institution Level:

RWSL Tech Manager  (FTE Salary Cost ~ $80,000/yr?)
This is someone who can install, configure, setup, operate and maintain the hardware and software for an RWSL lab. This person implements designer/architect experiment designs and maintains NANSLO RDN standard equipment and software configurations.

(Albert and Dan: Please list the skills required for this person)

RWSL Lab Technician (FTE Salary Cost ~ $70,000/yr?)
This is someone who is there at the RWSL when students and faculty are using it and can fix rudimentary problems that might occur during use, and provide a basic level of tech support. This person supports operational use.  It is recommended that this person also be a science lab tech who understands the science involved with the lab exercises being run.

(Albert and Dan: Please list the skills required for this person)

As you can see these three roles are tiered from most skilled to least skilled. I think its possible that the designer/architect might be a centralized position while the other two will more likely need to exist at each lab location.

OK thanks Pat. Do you have Todd's email address?

Ron-- you might want to check with Todd to see if he has a job description he used to recruit graduate students at Colorado School of Mines?
