NANSLO Consortium Membership Levels
This is an edited version of the levels (tiers) that an institution will pass through to become a member of the NANSLO RDN that was worked out at the April 2012 face-to-face meeting in Boulder Colorado. For the step by step process go to Process for Becoming a Member of the NANSLO RDN.

These institutions want to know more about the NANSLO RDN and RWSL: On a scheduled basis NANSLO provides demos, a tour of the sandbox, and a site visit. NANSLO will also supply access to open course-ware, links to research literature, orientation documents, high level funding requirements for an RWSL node, grant opportunities, names of consortium member institutions, and contacts. Much of this can be accomplished through the NANSLO website.

Faculty, IT

These institutions are seriously looking at joining the NANSLO RDN but are not teaching students yet: Upon contacting the NANSLO Coordinator these institutions will receive access to the faculty sandbox so they can work through lab exercises, all NANSLO supporting documents, training with RWSL use or operation, research outcome guides (pedagogy for simulations, lab kits, RWSL), and detailed funding requirements for remote lab services and the preparation of an RWSL Node.
The institution pays for RDN access as needed at the going hourly rate to offset costs to the network. In the case of training, a contract will be negotiated with NANSLO.

Tier 2

Pilot (‘small’ scale usage)
Faculty & students
These institutions have decided to try out NANSLO RDN Services: Upon joining NANSLO at a Tier 2 level an institution can schedule use of existing RWSL Nodes to serve a ‘small’ number of students, receive small scale tech support, receive technical consulting by phone (for free), receive on-site support (for an extra charge), and send non-voting representatives to the discipline panels of choice.
(Option: at this level the institution could buy, setup, and use their own equipment, but not serve the NANSLO RDN.)
The institution pays a reduced introductory 1 year Membership Fee and will pay the hourly usage fees normally charged for remote lab services. Tier 2 institutions will sign a 1 year Memorandum of Agreement to gain access to services.

Tier 3

Faculty & students

These institutions are limited members that use NANSLO remote lab services for their own students, but do not provide remote lab services to the NANSLO RDN: Tier 3 institutions recieve access to tech support for students, share scheduling, send full voting members to the discipline panels of their choice, can send non-voting representatives to the NANSLO Board, and can request new RWSL lab preparation through the discipline panels they participate in. They do not take part in the R&D and Technical Standards Committee.
Full membership fee + hourly usage of RLS. Tier 3 institutions will sign a Memorandum of Agreement committing them to using NANSLO RLS for 3 years.
Tier 4
Network Provider
Faculty & students
These institutions are full members that provide remote lab services to the NANSLO RDN: Tier 4 institutions receive all the benefits of Tier 3 institutions, plus they send full voting representatives to the NANSLO Board, take part in the R&D and Technical Standards Committee, provide & receive tech support, and receive revenue for providing remote lab services to the NANSLO RDN.
Full membership fee + hourly usage of RLS. Tier 4 institutions will sign a Memorandum of Agreement committing them to use NANSLO RLS for 5 years.

On Contract basis: Institutions with the expertise and an RWSL Node may bid on contracts to develop new RWSL labs. NANSLO will provide compensation for labs developed based on the contracts signed.
